POST OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR GYNAECOMASTIA

The following information will help you minimise unnecessary swelling, discomfort, bleeding and aid the healing process with minimal scarring.

  1. Waterproof dressings have been applied to your surgical sites, which enable you to shower.  Please make it brief and avoid having the shower directly on your dressings.  Pat dry and keep your dressings as dry as possible.  If your dressings become dislodged after a few days gently remove them.
  2. For the first two weeks to reduce swelling, use two or three pillows to support your head and shoulders.  Rest or sleep on your back keeping your shoulders elevated.
  3. Continue to use your medication as instructed. If medically possible avoid taking blood thinning medications containing Aspirin or Vitamin E for up to four weeks after surgery.
  4. Following a general anaesthetic you may experience a level of constipation.  Have light meals with plenty of fluids, preferably water. Eat ample fresh fruit and vegetables.  To reduce fluid retention, minimise salty foods.
  5. For the next three weeks avoid strenuous activity, excessive movement or lifting.  Ensure the careful placement of a car seat belt across your chest.
  6. Avoid smoking for 30 days after surgery as this can interfere with healing.
